CHAPTER 4 (10.03.2020)

Section 1: Building Foundations of Equality

In this course, how do we better explain the equations with an unknown? we talked about it.We have reviewed an application related to this.

QUESTION 6: How does the applet handle the division property of equality? How can this

strengthen student’s understanding? How might this limit their understanding?

ANSWER:

EQUATION: 2x + (-5) = – 15

In this equation, if we drop (-5) to the right side of the equation from left side of the equation, then 2x would be alone. Because the constant multiple of 2x is 2, we need to divide 2 all equations. That’s why we use division in this step.

QUESTION 7:How might using a balance representation help students build a deep understanding of the properties of equality used for solving equations?

ANSWER: Since we give students examples from daily life, they can comprehend the equation more quickly.  For example, we can start the student with the sample of the seesaw in the park. So students will come to life.

QUESTION 8:

Are there any limitations to this applet? If so, what are they? How might there limitations influence the way you use this applet with students?

ANSWER:Students can ask what they should do when the right side is an even number and the left side is an odd number. This is a limitation for this application.

OUR TASK: Ayşe Sena, Yıldırım and Ayşegül went to market and they bought 5 cans of milk and 5 kg oil. One can of milk is x kg. At the end of the shopping, Ayşe Sena and Ayşegül carried the milks and Yıldırım carried the oil. While they were going to their home, they saw Ecem and Melike in the park. Then they got together and all of them seesawed. Ecem and Melike sat on the right side of the seesaw and Ayşe Sena and Ayşegül sat on the left side of the seesaw with pockets. The seesaw is not balanced in this situation. Then Yıldırım put the oil to the Ayşegül’s pocket but he didn’t sit on the seesaw. Then the seesaw is balanced in this situation. If Ayşegül is 9  kg, Melike is 7 kg, Ayşe Sena is 6 kg, Ecem is 8 kg then, what is x?
